The Bowling Whirlywhelk is a species of sneramic appearing in Pikmin 2... Again?. They are snail-like creatures with a round, red-striped, cream-colored shell, three yellow feeding tentacles, and green eyes mounted on yellow stalks coming from the shell. The Bowling Whirlywhelk primary appears in pool-table-themed sublevels, where they'll use their tentacles to push themselves forward and roll, crushing any Pikmin and leaders. However, as the terrain of pool-themed sublevels is not hard, Rock Pikmin will only be pressed into the ground slightly, a state they can recover from themselves. After some distance, they'll stop, turn around, and roll again. The Bowling Whirlywhelk can push billiard balls, and if it falls into the pool table's black pockets, it'll appear from another. It will try to avoid the red pockets, and if Rock Pikmin are thrown at it, it can be knocked into a red pocket, where it will be trapped. The Bowling Whirlywhelk has a larger, boss variant named Strike Whirlywhelk.

Notably in the Cave Creator, a Bowling Whirlywhelk that is placed in a non-pool sublevel theme will sweat, and have noticeable difficulty rolling, struggling to roll forward and coming to a quick stop. This is a unique reaction seen nowhere else, but also occurs with enemies made to be in a specific theme.

The Bowling Whirlywhelk is an enemy in Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid. It is a snail-like creature living in a red-striped shell akin to a nautilus. Its two eyestalks and three feeding tentacles peek out from a slit in the shell. Initially, it simply wobbles back and forth in place, its two eyestalks observing the squad and its feeding tentacles foaming. When approached, it will retract these features inside of its shell and roll after them, crushing Pikmin on contact. It eventually stops rolling momentarily to retain its sense of direction, during which it can be swarmed by Pikmin to break its shell. Rock Pikmin can make light work of this creature if they're directly thrown at its shell. When its shell breaks, the Bowling Whirlywhelk will fall onto the ground, creating a puddle of snail slime that makes all Pikmin stick to it. Since no Pikmin can resist adhesives, they must be thrown directly at the Bowling Whirlywhelk to attack it. The creature is unable to move without its shell due to the strength of its adhesive slime.

If hit by the spores of a Slugstool, a live Bowling Whirlywhelk will be turned into a Mildewed Whirlywhelk.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Closely related to the slooches, this creature uses its burly shell to incapacitate prey, typically small insects, and then slurps them up with its feeding tentacles. As to keep the bowling whirlywhelk anchored to its shell and prevent it from being disoriented as it does its rolling, it will secrete a powerful adhesive that keeps it firmly in place within its shell. However, if this shell breaks, it often leaves the mollusk completely harmless, and permanently fixed in place due to the nature of its adhesives.

Louie's notes

Simply cook in the shell over an open fire until it melts completely. The slime will be completely diluted, allowing you to slurp it straight from its shell like a canteen! Rich in protein and with a satisfying, soup-like texture.

Bentley's notes

What a funny creature! The way it rolls around in its shell is simply charming, but it's ultimately a deception. I always thought snails were pretty cool, but seeing this one trample smaller beings with relative ease makes them cooler two-fold in my eyes.

Eloise's notes

I owned a pet snail once when I was young. I don't really want to harm this guy...
