The Moletar is a species of numbouse appearing in Pikmin Evolution and a close relative of the Spicy Moletar. It has a rotund build with a brown pelt, small but noticeable frontal fangs, and long black frontal claws, which it uses to dig its dens. The most notable element of the Moletar, however, is the large, pink, tube-shaped nose it has on its face, which it can contract and lengthen at will. Initially appearing as a clumsy rodent, the Moletar is often first seen sneezing out the excess sand and dirt it inhaled while excavating its den, which is reminiscent of the den of a Breadbug. This rather clumsy display would suggest it is not the ferocious, territorial rodent it truly is.

The Moletar hoards several turnip-like vegetables in its den and uses them as part of its offensive and defensive attacks. There are three turnips the Moletar uses when in combat: pink, yellow, and red. The pink turnip is the primary one the Moletar uses. It's too bitter to be edible, so instead of eating it, the Moletar launches the turnip out of its nose like a cannon, and when the turnip collides with the ground, it bursts into a cloud of poisonous gas that has the added effect of pushing any Pikmin in the radius back, including the Roach Pikmin immune to the poison. The Moletar uses a yellow turnip when it is swarmed. It is too hard to eat, so the Moletar instead uses it to hammer any Pikmin swarming it, crushing them. This attack is quite fast and hard to dodge, so it is best to only swarm it with Alloy Pikmin as they are immune to the crushing, but they should still watch out for the poison gas of the pink turnips. Finally, when facing heavy damage, the Moletar will grab a sweet red turnip to eat, restoring up to half of its total health. The Moletar is quite a resilient enemy, so the addition of the red turnip can make fighting it quite a hassle.

While mixing attacking it afar with Roach Pikmin and attacking it up close with Alloy Pikmin may be a viable strategy, the most effective one is to clog the nose of the Moletar. Since the Moletar needs to inhale air to activate its nasal cannon, inserting something into it can cause it great discomfort. The most effective way to clog the nose is to toss a cyan syrup into it as it inhales, as the ice inside will cause the Moletar massive sneezing issues, forcing it out of its den and revealing a soft belly to attack for extra damage. When killed, not only can its carcass be taken, but one of its turnips will suddenly pop out from its den. The turnip will be either bronze, silver, or gold, each having its own distinct weight, seed, and sparklium values. The gold turnip, in particular, is worth the same amount of sparklium as a small piece of refuse, so hunting the Moletar for its golden turnips may prove to be an unorthodox but worthwhile money-making scheme.

The Moletar is an enemy in the Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid DLC Operation: Rubber Ducky Overboard. This mammal is a distant relative of the Bearded Amprat and a close relative of the Spicy Moletar. As in Pikmin Evolution, it is a fanged, brown mole with black claws and a pink, tube-like snout. This snout can extend and contract at will, and can also forcibly eject objects like a cannon. While idle, it excavates through its den, resembling a Hermit Crawmad's hole, and often involuntarily sneezes from the dust within. The turnips the Moletar stores in its den have unique properties. From a distance, it will lodge bitter pink turnips into its nose and fire them like a cannon. These turnips burst into a puddle of poisonous sludge upon hitting the ground. Although White Pikmin are absent, it can be nullified using a source of gloom, turning both hazards into healing bliss. In close combat, the Moletar will use a hardy yellow turnip as a bludgeoning club, wielding it by the leaves and smashing it into the ground. If its health goes too low, it might pull out a sweet green turnip infused with bliss, and messily gnaw it down. This restores the Moletar's health exponentially. Aside from the poison nullification strategy, using Moss's ice attacks from the cyan Fruiting Pugweed berries will congest the Moletar, leaving it vulnerable due to its sinuses. The Moletar will pop out of its burrow when defeated, alongside either a bronze, silver, or gold turnip that can give even more Pikmin.

Three particular Moletars in the Golden Spring live in a circle of parched soil. If defeated, the Bi-Clawed Slag will be summoned.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Divergent evolution is at play in this specimen, for despite resembling a mole, it's actually a rodent in the numbouse family. The creature has been observed cultivating subterranean vegetables in its burrow known by xenobotanists as mole turnips. This particular cultivar of an otherwise common plant has unique properties depending on its genetic makeup, sometimes being unfit for consumption due to being too bitter or hardy. Despite this, white turnips and even some of a unique, opulent sheen have been found in its burrows and confirmed to be edible. When exposed to the otherworldly substance that is gloom, the toxins in the pink turnips will be purified into a healing agent known as bliss. These turnips turn red as a result, and the moletar's seemingly endless supply of them implies it somehow has some sort of control over the substance. Perhaps its burrow contains fungus chambers of mushrooms that give off the supernatural substance for this very reason?

Louie's notes

The shiny turnips it gathers make for a wonderful display! Slice them into chips and apply light salt, oven-fry, and lay out in a bed on a tray. Dinner guests will be enthralled by the scale-like formation of the chips, and how they alternate in a set pattern, gradually growing more and more opalescent! Stuff the moletar itself with breadcrumbs and the cheese of your choice, and bake as well. Lay the moletar on top of the bed and bask in the illusion of decadence as you enjoy one of my personal favorite meals.

Structural flaw: poor ventilation
Weight: 7

From a distance, it's very much like a sentry or mortar cannon, hence the name. When you get up in its face, however, it changes its strategy on the fly to crush your soldiers flat. I haven't seen such adaptability outside of the robot warmongers of fiction.

Brittany's comments

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a fruit person first and foremost, but those green turnips look really delicious. Maybe if we tame it, it would share some with me. Now that's some food for thought.

Charlie's comments

Using nature's own resources as world-class weaponry? Now THAT'S a crafty skill I wish I could have. I fear that I've grown reliant on my professional tools. Case in point, I once impulsively tried to use a welding torch to fix a tear in my space suit... I'm a brave man for admitting that.
