The Gatling Groink is a biomechatronic creature that has an appearance reminiscent of a rotund goldfish. Gatling Groinks usually patrol their territories and are known to seek out the active leader and their Pikmin, but some are stationary atop a high vantage point, giving them a wide attack range. It attacks by revealing a cannon from its mouth and firing mortar shells from it with little time between firings. When the shells hit the ground, they explode and scatter any of the Pikmin in range, killing those at the absolute center of the blast.

Notes
Olimar's observations
- “This is easily one of the strangest beasts we've seen on any journey to this planet. It's scary as well, hearing those footstep sounds puts me and Louie on full alert. It appears to fire blasts of highly flammable... what I can only assume is it's stomach acid. I've only brought a few tools for research this trip, so sadly I can't know much about it. I almost did bring all my equipment, but I decided not to. Hey, I wasn't specting to see so many new creatures!”
Cookin' with Louie
- “After some recent discoveries this beast has been deemed as inedible due to some explosive consequences the day after eating it...”

Attacks | Fires explosive mortar shells, knocks Pikmin away |
The Gatling Groink is an enemy that appears in Pikmin Eco. It is rare, only found in two caves and never found aboveground. Its behavior is slightly altered in that it will not fire at Pikmin and leaders that are too close to it, to negate the risk of damaging itself with its mortar shells. Instead, it quickly drops onto the ground to knock them back to a suitable distance before firing at them.
Notes
In-game entry
- “The infamous aggression of this species still seems to hold true: a terrifying mixture of biological and mechanical components to form the top predator. However, it's also just as true that this predator is becoming rare in some locations, and extinct everywhere else. Most likely this is the case of it evolving into more of a weapon than an animal. It's a bit of a shame really, given how far in evolution it has come.”

Attacks | Fires explosive mortar shells, spits Pikmin away |
In Pikmin Forever, the Gatling Groink has a crystal on its head instead of a glass shield, and four smokestacks on its back. The crystal can be broken by a Rock Pikmin, leaving the groink more vulnerable but faster. The Gatling Groink can fire its familiar projectiles but can also use its firing appendage to inhale Pikmin surrounding it and fire them away, as an added defense to its softened shaking move. Attacking the tail will prevent the creature from firing. They can be found in Forbidding Precipice, Canyon of Moonlight, sublevel three of Ceramic Rift, and sublevel seven of Flurry Shelter.
Notes
Olimar's notes
- “Only recently has this elusively evolved juggernaut developed an orifice that serves both as a muscle for firing projectiles and a proboscis for drinking nectar. The mechanical components of the groink's digestive and lymphatic systems may seem a bit advanced for its ecosystem, but the groink has used this adaptation to climb the trophic ladder and become a top predator. The launching of projectiles seems to serve mainly as a defense mechanism now since specific prey species for the groink have dwindled; yet still, the groink's aggressive predatory behavior persists. Although an ambitious claim, ecological models predict that the future evolution of the Gatling Groink will probably soften or even remove its predatory mechanism in favor of a more peaceable coexistence with herbivorous counterparts.”

In Pikmin: Shipwrecked Stargazers the Gatling Groink can be clipped of its defenses by throwing Rock Pikmin at its windshield, something impossible in Pikmin 2. One Gatling Groink inadvertently opens up Gladiator's Gulch in a cutscene, where it misfires attempting to hit a Dwarf Red Bulborb and destroys the steel clog blocking the entrance.
Notes
Olimar's notes
- “Inarguably one of the most fearful organisms of PNF-404, this fish-like monster repurposed its digestive tract into a makeshift cannon. From within its body, it creates pellets of volatile material that explode upon intense stimulus, such as that which is caused by collision after being launched. Other organisms in the area instinctively know to not mess with this powerhouse, less they want to be seared fatally.”
Louie's notes
- “No amount of thundering artillery will stop my insatiable desire to prepare every organism on this planet! Gatling Groink stir fry is best prepared with the sprouts of figworts and caramelized onions. Just remove the incriminating weapon parts first, or else you might blow the roof off your house!”
Ship's comments
- “This underhanded fish can come back to its senses if left alone after its initial defeat. My databases tell me that this is what all the new models call, "hax".”

Attacks | Fires explosive mortar shells |
In Pikmin: Spark, the Gatling Groink is much different from its Pikmin 2 incarnation. It is more mechanical in appearance, with its joints resembling gears, and upon death, a spring clogs its mortar cannon. Present on its back is a mechanism resembling a winding key, which is a major mechanic in its behavior: while the key is turning, the creature patrols the area, and when the key stops, the creature quickly collapses, rendering it vulnerable. The key also acts as a weak point, dealing more damage to the creature when hit. Otherwise, it shares the same behavior as its previous incarnation, although it never revives itself upon death.

- “Replace the explosive matter with medicine, and the mortar cannon of this beast now shoots pills.”
Lyn's sale review
- “The internal mechanisms of this beast makes some great weapons, so, of course, DON'T SELL THIS.”
