The Breachshrieker is an enemy in Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid. It is a rotund, black fish with red fins, glowing white eyes, and a massive mouth with a pair of sickle-like fangs. It resembles a pacific viperfish, which becomes more apparent according to Olimar's notes. Swimming erratically in the water, the Breachshrieker does not target leaders or Pikmin at first. It only begins its assault after releasing a massive, shrill screeching noise that sends all the Pikmin into panic. After this it charges up a boost and thrusts itself towards the crowd with its mouth open to eat Pikmin it catches. It is already dangerous itself, however, it is also capable of deliberately breaching itself onto dry land, hence its name. After it does so it will creep across the ground after Pikmin to consume, letting out the occasional screech to scare any remaining Pikmin.

The Breachshrieker is inspired by a concept left over from Pikmin: 100 Days Without a Ship; the original, 2016-era draft of Pikmin: Shipwrecked Stargazers. An enemy called the, "Boofish" is mentioned on one particular cave page.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The phosbat of the seas, this unnerving specimen actually has a naturally streamlined form. It lives in the midnight zone of the ocean, where the intense water pressure gives it a streamlined, snakelike build. During the summer, they migrate to the brighter zones of the ocean, where the lower pressure causes them to lose their form. On the surface, it relies on using intense vocalisations that reverbiate the waters, disorienting their loosely triggered prey, small creatures that is, into a state of flight response. The grim fish procedes to pick off the disturbed fish.

Louie's notes

Marinate the fillets in teriyaki sauce and serve with steamed white rice, bean sprouts and brocolli to combine the gifts of the sea with the land.

Bentley's notes

I'm not easily scared, but it IS easy my adrenaline pumping. I'd never expected to see a creature that lives so deep in the sea in the enviornment we did, and I got a bit excited afterwards. Olimar has said he visited the depths of the ocean on a previous expedition. I wonder how he missed this weirdo.

Eloise's notes

Grandpa Otto might be unsure on how to display this creature in his museum if we bring on to him. I'm sure he'll find a way however – he's so inquisitive!
