Operation: Rubber Ducky Overboard is a DLC expansion for Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid. Taking place after the main mode and before Pikmin: Familial Bonds, it is centered around the Koppaites going back to PNF-404 for the most absurd of reasons: looking for Captain Charlie's rubber ducky. Aside from the fruit from the main campaign, data files are the main collectible, meant to pinpoint the location of Louie.

Plot

Prologue

Back at his office, Captain Charlie is restless. He has been unable to find his most prized possession, his rubber ducky, for years at this point. Eventually, Charlie's mind wanders to the absolute worst-case scenario. Fearful that it's as bad as he thinks, he contacts ship engineer Alph to run a scan of PNF-404. His fears are ultimately confirmed as his rubber ducky has been detected on the surface of the planet. After the S.S. Drake entered hyperdrive whilst leaving the Formidable Oak, the rubber ducky, initially thought to be Louie, fell out of the ship. Due to the distance of the signal, and the amount of time since their initial expedition on the planet, most of the data concerning the location of the rubber ducky is encrypted. Fearful of the possibility that his duck might be lost forever, he attempts to round up the team to revisit PNF-404 once and for all. While Alph is onboard, Brittany is less so, but joins in anyway in hopes of finding new fruit cultivars. With a ten-day juice supply, the three heroes of Koppai return to the planet of the Pikmin once more.

First Steps

Landing in Golden Springs, the crew is quick to find an Onion, halfway buried in the ground. A few Black Pikmin are hiding under a patch of clovers from a Swooping Snitchbug. When Charlie intervenes, the Black Pikmin are quick to turn the tables and defeat the Swooping Snitchbug. They then unearth their Onion, and it sprouts to life. Later down the road, the squad finds a puddle of tar containing what appears to be an unconscious castaway. The Black Pikmin must be sent to work at this puddle, at which point the castaway stands up and reveals himself to be Louie. Both groups are shocked; the Koppaites thought Louie was back on Hocotate since the signal turned out to be from the ducky. Louie is shocked because he fears the Koppaites want to kidnap him once more. He flees to his custom-designed ship, the S.S. Potluck, and blasts off. Charlie assumes he must've stolen the rubber ducky once more, and tries to chase him down in order to save his beloved toy.

Not too far later, they find a data file left behind by Louie from a snack run of his. It contains presumed coordinates for the location of something Louie apparently finds more delicious than anything else on the planet. However, little is known of what this delicacy is, for most of the data has been encrypted and split into multiple fragments. Alph suggests they search for more of these objects. After obtaining five data files, they discover information on a location Louie describes as having a lot of Anxious Sprouts. They agree to go to this location, the Valley of Harvest, the next day.

Locations

As with the main campaign, the areas in Operation: Rubber Ducky Overboard are all based on real-world locations.

  • Golden Spring: a rocky shoreline of a larger river somewhere in the Northwestern United States. Massive pine forests surround the boundaries of this region, and an expansive culture of freshwater life lives within.
  • Valley of Harvest: the forest and gardens surrounding a farmhouse in the Japanese countryside. Frequently features sloped, hilly terrain.
  • Forlorn Fortress: a ruined resort building within the deserts of Mexico. It sits amidst a nearly endless expanse of dry sand, yucca plants, and cacti. The enemies in the desert are particularly dangerous.
  • Prosperous Shore: a Polynesian island, likely a part of the Hawaii island chain, populated by an amazing range of tropical life. Going inland reveals immense jungles and many geysers.
  • Undergrowth Crossroads: the floor of a rainforest located in the Congo. Due to the amount of massive shrubbery and other plants above, it appears as if it's always night down here.
  • Verdant Ridgeland: an open meadow at the foot of a mountain range in the Swiss Alps. Some areas require that the squad climb higher to reach fruit or cave entrances.
  • City of Golems: a series of ancient ruins in Greece. The air is incredibly arid, and the days are twice as long. There is also a small shore area, where more Mediterranean-style aquatic life can be found.
