The Emperor Bulblax is a larger grub-dog that hides in the ground to ambush prey, erupting from it when they come near, and then attempting to catch them with its long, sticky tongue or crush them under its immense weight. Its soft face is its only weak point to attack. It doesn't discriminate much when eating, so it can be led to swallow something a bit less tasteful than Pikmin; namely, bomb rocks.

In Pikmin 1, a gigantic Emperor Bulblax is the final boss. Only its mossy backside protrudes from the ground when first encountered. Along with being able to eat an unlimited amount of Pikmin in a single lick and crush any standing under it by hopping in place, the Emperor Bulblax may, after reaching below half-health, periodically leap high into the air to come crashing down upon its attackers. It drools uncontrollably when it wants to eat, and when it wants to jump, it stops drooling, and widens its eyes and hunkers down shortly before doing so.

In Pikmin 2, Emperor Bulblaxes are much smaller, weaker, and more common, and lie in wait with only their eyestalks exposed. In place of their high jump attack, they may roar when at or below one-quarter health, calling any nearby Emperor Bulblaxes to the fight and causing existing Mitites to emerge from the ground. After death, an Emperor Bulblax's body can be recovered.

In Hey! Pikmin, a giant Emperor Bulblax serves as the penultimate boss. Although it never leaves its central position in its arena, its attacks have a far reach. It attacks mainly by biting, but also by performing a horizontal tongue swipe before its chomp attack after reaching two-thirds health. If the Emperor Bulblax chomps on a bomb rock, it will chew on it until it blows up in its mouth, causing a small amount of damage and it to topple forward onto the ground, stunned and motionless. After recovering, it jumps up, burrows into the ground, and two Crumbugs emerge from behind the grass surrounding the buried bulblax a short while before the Emperor Bulblax itself emerges from the ground. After reaching two-thirds health, the Emperor Bulblax will shake before jumping, and then quickly turn to face its prey's new position while in mid-air, rather than simply turning to face them. When the Emperor Bulblax shakes, two Sparrowheads emerge from behind it and flank the leaders and Pikmin, one on each side, swooping down at them while the bulblax prepares its licking attack; after its health reaches one-third, four Sparrowheads appear rather than two.

This article or section presents information pertaining to Pikmin: Mysterious World, a fanfiction created by the Pikmin Fanon community.

An Emperor Bulblax has appeared in the story serial of Pikmin: Mysterious World. It was apparently the same Emperor Bulblax that swallowed the Secret Safe. It claimed it had been killed, a seeming paradox since it should not be alive to tell if it was killed. An explanation has not yet been given. Notably, the Emperor Bulblax was called the "Ancient One". It is unknown if this is its real name or just a title given to it by the Intelligence. Interestingly, the Emperor Bulblax smelled Sagittarius and mistook him for Olimar. Sagittarius is Olimar's son, which is likely the reason behind the mistake.

Notes

Olimar's observations

Well, for the third time, I find these creatures are back and ready to eat. This time they seem stronger than before, but still nothing compared to the monstrous one I fought on my first visit. That one really was a beast. I've come so far with my exploring abilities since those days. I'm impressed I was even able to pull it off back then! Still, I shouldn't act like these are no fuss now. It seems that the best way to fight is to spam Pikmin right onto it's head as it is still emerging. Its cheap, sure, but it works. I frankly don't care what it takes, the important thing is to have as few Pikmin lost as possible.

In Pikmin Chronicles, an Emperor Bulblax serves as the first boss, appearing towards the end of chapter one. It is found buried in the ground on the last sublevel of the cave it is in, with both its eyes and moss-covered back exposed. The Pikmin walk up to it, unaware of what it is until it is too late. It initially is too strong to kill and must be fled from by escaping the cave. Once on the surface, the ground shakes and a roar is heard. A few seconds later, the upset Emperor Bulblax bursts through the ground and terrorizes the landing site, which is where the boss battle takes place, It is about the same size as the one in Pikmin 1 and is killed the same way. After it is killed, its body is taken away, and it is realized that the hole the Emperor Bulblax created when it busted through the ground has opened up a new path.

The Emperor Bulblax appears in Pikmin Eco as the main boss of Bulblax Treetops in Bounty Canopy. It is exceptionally larger than any other encountered bulborb species. It is initially found buried under the ground, with only its eyestalks visible, and remains inactive until approached by Pikmin or leaders, prompting it to then burst out of the ground to attack. Its main attack is lashing its large tongue out to slurp up unsuspecting Pikmin, but after shaking off some Pikmin, it jumps into the air and slams onto the ground. This attack launches Pikmin back, and temporarily paralyzes leaders, also dealing slight damage to them. The hard layer covering its backside renders it face its only weakpoint. It and the Hex-at-Legs are the only bosses that the Hoverpack is required to use to fight against. Using the Hoverpack to stay off the ground is the only way for leaders to avoid the effects of the Emperor Bulblax's tremor attack.

Notes

In-game entry

The Emperor Bulblax is the largest known male species of the grub-dog family, only smaller than the Empress Bulblax. It's intriguing how this species tends to grow much larger when above ground whereas the size severely decreases for those who live underground. This has been classified as environmentally effective growth, as smaller subspecies are better fitted to live underground than larger ones, who themselves are more durable due to competition for food. It buries itself out of sight and only attacks once a prey item gets close.
