The Membranous Puffstorm is a rather uncommon species of sporovid that appears in Pikmin: Dual Worlds. Its eyes, like those of most sporovids, are tan, while its antennae are bright yellow and its cap is green with a ring of magenta spots around the bottom; furthermore, its main body has a slight blueish tint, and is a good deal slimmer than that of most other sporovids, and thus is a good deal less durable. Due to this, it has a thin membrane connected to its cap that surrounds its body, preventing any attackers from harming it without piercing the membrane, which would release a thick cloud of dangerous spores. The Puffstorm often produces spores from its cap, most of which are recycled but some of which pass through the four thin slits in the membrane that allow it to constantly spread spores, further deterring prey. It produces just enough spores to keep a constant, steady pressure within the membrane despite the leaking spores. If one or several new slits or cuts in the membrane were to be made, it would lose pressure and eventually deflate, leaving the Puffstorm with a sagging, useless membrane that constantly gets caught on rocks and roots and other whatnots until it manages to wriggle out and flee. If the slits were to be blocked, a similar effect would be produced eventually. Either way, since the spores it produces don't move very far on their own unless pushed out of the way by other spores, once relieved of its membrane it can be safely dispatched. If it were to be set on fire, the spores would likely prove incredibly dangerous to it due to being flammable.

The Puffstorm is a boss sporovid encountered in the Lost Chasm in Pikmin: The Rising Darkness. It was a normal Puffstool that was struck by a chemical bomb, causing it to mutate into a cloud of purple gas with a pair of yellow antennae hovering above it. Its mutations gave it enhanced abilities, allowing it to use several hazards to its benefit as well as summon other members of its family. Pikmin that come too close to the creature will be transformed into ravenous Mushroom Pikmin. The Puffstorm has the ability to generate balls of electricity using its antennae which the creature can fire at its attackers. There has been speculation as to if the Puffstorm is an entirely new species, but it cannot be confirmed. Upon defeat, the creature implodes, leaving nothing behind. Because of this, the biology of the Puffstorm is a complete mystery.
