The Mockwraith is a boss appearing in Pikmin 2... Again?. It is similar to its Pikmin: Dusk and Dawn incarnation, being a Waterwraith-like creature with club-like limbs made out of stone. It appears in night expeditions from the Midnight Ruins, during which it simply roams about, completely ignoring any Lumiknolls and Tricknolls near it. However, if it sees Pikmin and leaders, it will chase them and brutally smash them with its stone limbs, killing all but Rock Pikmin and severely damaging leaders. Like the Waterwraith, it can not be damaged or killed, only fled from, until its weakness is found.

The final cave of Midnight Ruins, namely the Death Den, is where the Mockwraith is first confronted. It roams the cave's maze-like sublevels much like it would during nighttime on the surface and can only be avoided. Later, in the final sublevel, it appears to be absent, but will quickly make its presence known by landing on and destroying a 100-pellet lying in the center of its chamber before the leaders and Pikmin even have a chance to touch it. The impact also destroys the glass floor of the chamber, sending the Mockwraith, Pikmin, and leaders plummeting to the ground below, hinting at how the fight will progress. The Mockwraith will be a constant threat as it persistently chases after the Pikmin and leaders. The only way to defeat the Mockwraith is to activate satellite dishes dotted about each level, causing them to generate a loud, piercing sound that renders the Mockwraith vulnerable, a state in which it turns a deep purple color. After the Mockwraith takes enough damage, the satellite will automatically turn off and the Mockwraith will fly into a frenzy, smashing the glass floor supporting it, the Pikmin, and the leaders. This process will repeat until reaching the bottom of the shaft, which is made of a dense layer of stone. After finally being defeated, the Mockwraith will disappear, leaving only its four stone limbs.

Attacks Crushes Pikmin

The Mockwraith is the night-dwelling terror of Lake Tearfall in Pikmin: Dusk and Dawn. It resembles the Waterwraith, albeit standing upright, with a faint orange-ish tint, and rather than possessing its signature rollers, its four limbs are covered in stone. Various small rocks and pebbles can be seen inside its watery body. It appears fifteen minutes past sunset to roam the surface. The first time it appears, a cutscene will occur: the S.S. Twilight will warn that it is extremely dangerous to stay on the planet's surface past sundown, and urges the leaders to give up whatever they are doing and leave it for tomorrow, as the ship can not detect the wraith with its sensors and thereby deems it too much of a hazard to safely continue. If the warnings are ignored, the only way to survive is to hide in foliage, since the Mockwraith can not be harmed in any way on the first night. If a Pikmin or leader is in its line of sight, the Mockwraith will emit an alert sound, and then begin to relentlessly pursue its prey until it either catches up or loses them. If it catches up, it will trample those leaders and Pikmin, killing them. Taking refuge in a hiding place while it is close is often futile as it will more often than not trample hiding Pikmin and leaders anyway. Gaining distance before hiding provides the highest chance of safety, and losing the Mockwraith's attention. Its chase theme is a much more fast-paced, distorted version of the Waterwraith's chase theme. While running, it produces loud, dreadful thumps, and although the sound doesn't have any effect on gameplay, it could instill fear in the player, as they are likely facing away from the Mockwraith and have no idea of the distance between them and it.

After the first night of surviving the Mockwraith, the ship seems to notice that a cave had been dug up by the "mysterious wraith-like entity", as it calls the Mockwraith. Upon investigation, the cave is revealed to be the Sunken Stronghold, which is ten sublevels deep and where the Mockwraith resides. Like its predecessors, Submerged Castle and Engulfed Castle, Sunken Stronghold features the Mockwraith as a looming threat, appearing seven minutes into a sublevel, so hurrying along is advised to avoid a confrontation. On the final sublevel, there is a very damaged speaker from which ten Echo Pikmin, the Mockwraith's weakness, pop out when approached by leaders. The leaders use their new otherworldly Pikmin against the Mockwraith and inadvertently anchor it to their plane. Due to the Echo Pikmin's traits, the Mockwraith locks up, becoming a solid orange color, indicating its newfound vulnerability. However, it doesn't go down quite as easily as its lesser brethren. The Mockwraith has three different attacks to use against its assailants. One is jumping and causing the ground to quake upon landing, causing boulders to fall. Another is assuming an athletic runner's "ready" position before charging from one side of the arena two to three times, or three to five times in Hard Mode. When it is attacked enough in its vulnerable state, it shakes its attackers off and slams its fists on the ground, causing boulders to crash to the ground, and then roars before attempting to charge the leaders and Pikmin. Throw Echo Pikmin at it while it charges to force it to cower again. Once its health is sufficiently whittled down, the Mockwraith retreats to the surface. As a final retaliation, the beast roars, causing Pikmin to panic so it can trample them before it makes its escape. If the Echo Pikmin suffer an extinction at any point in the fight, the numbered gate present on the sublevel will automatically open, allowing the leaders to abandon the fight, leave the Sunken Stronghold, and traverse the cave once again to try again; if this occurs, the achievement "Silenced" will be unlocked.

Upon following the Mockwraith out of its lair, sunset will be upon the leaders and Pikmin. There are no other enemies present while the battle continues. Once night falls, the Mockwraith will show itself, its rocky limbs now cracked, its watery, transparent skin visible through some chunks of it that have been beaten off. It resumes its assault, and the goal now is to finish the beast off. It now attempts to dodge any Echo Pikmin that are thrown at it, so the best time to do so would be when the Mockwraith tires itself out by either running or attacking. Once its health is reduced to half, it becomes frightened, changing its tactics to be more defensive than offensive. It will flee and attempt to hide in bushes, but due to its large size, it is rather easy to spot. Once it is defeated, it will drop to the ground and throw a tantrum, slamming its arms and feet onto the ground, all the while dropping 25 Solium, 50 Luminum, a Poko crate worth 1,500 Pokos, and the Master Noisemaker, an upgrade that increases the leaders' whistle range. After its very embarrassing fit, it runs off, still alive. Although the Master Noisemaker is a very important part of the Exploration Kit, helping make gathering Pikmin easier, it also increases the noise the whistle makes, so use it wisely to avoid awakening sleeping enemies.

After its defeat on the surface, it will not show up for another two days, seemingly recovering. After that, it will appear again, and Echo Pikmin can be used to defeat it swiftly. The battle is much like that on the surface from the Sunken Stronghold's final sublevel, but the Mockwraith doesn't cower as long and its health is reduced. When defeated, it drops 10 Solium, 25 Luminum, and a Poko crate containing 750 Pokos.

In Champion's Descent, it roams sublevels twenty-five to thirty after 4.5 to 5 minutes have passed. It can either be avoided entirely or defeated for the current sublevel. Sublevel thirty has several broken speakers that a total of ten Echo Pikmin emerge from. If the Mockwraith destroys those ten Echo Pikmin, the numbered gate on the sublevel will open, allowing escape and also granting the "Silenced" achievement if it hasn't already been unlocked. Once defeated, it will not reappear for the rest of the cave.

The Mockwraith produces noises very akin to the Waterwraith, albeit sounding a lot more distorted and eerie. The only other noise it makes other than grunting or wailing is laughing once it successfully exterminates any Echo Pikmin present in the area. The music of any sublevel it resides in, including all sublevels of the Sunken Stronghold and sublevels twenty-five to thirty of the Champion's Descent, is reminiscent of the Submerged Castle's theme, though a lot more foreboding and ominous.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Mockwraith / Mimichaser sapiens / Supernatura family. Never in my life have I been so, viscerally afraid of a creature on this planet. Not only does it mimic a creature I already have terrible nightmares about, but it stalks above ground, looking for me in the dark. If I ever encounter this beast again, I must remember that hiding is the only way to survive. That is, without an Echo Pikmin to ground it to this dimension. But even then it doesn't die. It always comes back, it always comes back! I need to lie down... I shan't sleep tonight. Or ever. But, despite my fears, I must know more about this creature... I will attempt to acquire a sample tomorrow night, if I don't wet myself, that is.

Chacho's Notes

Its body could be made entirely of pure gold and I still wouldn't touch it with a 12-foot pole. Although... No!! It's too dangerous...

S.S. Twilight's notes

Like most wraiths, not much is known about the Mockwraith. It seems to be another incarnation of the Waterwraith, although it now wanders around with impenetrable stone covering its limbs. Through close study, it seems to only target species of the Pikmin family and captains, leaving other creatures alone. It is unknown why it does this. Captain Olimar has attempted to bottle up small samples of the creature's gelatinous body, but when brought back, it had been revealed that the substance had seemingly disappeared! This has led the valiant Captain Olimar to theorize that the Mockwraith, along with most other wraiths, is some form of supernatural, or even spiritual, phenomenon.
