Lumiknolls are large dirt mounds that serve as shelters for Glow Pikmin, which they function like Onions for. They rise from the ground at night, and so are typically found during night expeditions. Juvenile Lumiknolls, known as Tricknolls, serve as extensions of the Lumiknoll.

For every three glow pellets that are delivered to a Lumiknoll, the Lumiknoll will produce one Glow Pikmin. Rather than being ejected as seeds, however, they will simply be dispensed, and dispensed Glow Pikmin will automatically teleport to the active leader. All glow pellets transported to Tricknolls are then transferred to the main Lumiknoll to propagate Glow Pikmin.

Creatures are naturally attracted to Lumiknolls because of the glow sap they contain and will attempt to destroy them at all costs to get a taste. If the Tricknolls have been activated, enemies will target them first, and their destruction has no consequences beyond no longer having a distraction from the Lumiknoll. Occasionally, two Lumiknolls will be present in an area at once.

Defending all Lumiknolls present until dawn will cause them to produce glow seeds, used to summon Glow Pikmin in caves, and glow sap, used to cure leaflings.

Use Produces Glow Pikmin

The Lumiknoll, commonly mispelled as Luminknoll, is a object appearing in Pikmin 2... Again?. The Lumiknoll is first found in the First Darkness, the first night expedition, in which the Glow Pikmin come out of the Lumiknoll, scaring Louie. The Lumiknoll resembles a large dirt mound with many yellow-lime glowing holes along its sides. It can also emit a colored beacon from the hole on top of it, and the beacon can be blue, red, yellow, green, orange, and purple. The Lumiknoll acts as the Onion for the Glow Pikmin; likewise, they are only found at night, when Onions and therefore other Pikmin types are unusable.

Luminknolls can be found in several places throughout an area. The first one the leaders defend is the blue Lumiknoll, with 10 Glow Pikmin to start with. Like how other Pikmin carry pellets to their Onion to propagate, Glow Pikmin take glow pellets to the Lumiknoll for the same purpose, with 1 Glow Pikmin being produced for every 3 glow pellets. Enemies won't initially target the Lumiknoll, but they will eventually take notice of it, indicated by their eyes glowing red and their immediate fixation on the Lumiknoll. For each Lumiknoll is a health bar at the top of the screen, accompanied by an icon of the Lumiknoll itself, that gradually depletes as enemies attack the structure. If the Lumiknoll's health is low enough, a sound effect plays and its health bar will constantly fade between green and red. Once the dawn breaks, all enemies will revert to normal and walk away from the Lumiknoll, the Lumiknoll will eject a glow crystal, and every remaining Glow Pikmin will disintegrate, every 20 Glow Pikmin into glow sparkles. If the Lumiknoll is destroyed, its icon turns gray, the icon and health bar disappear, and the expedition fails.

A variant of the Lumiknoll is the Tricknoll. They are much smaller than the Lumiknoll and have only one hole. They are scattered about the area and will become active, the hole lighting up, if a leader gets close enough. The Tricknolls act as extensions of the Lumiknoll, making propagating Glow Pikmin much faster and easier as glow pellets can be delivered to them as well. Tricknolls have a health wheel and are much weaker than Lumiknolls, but can be used as effective distractions from the Lumiknoll as enemies will target them before it. Their destruction does not fail the night expedition.

If the Lumiknoll is destroyed, the night expedition will fail, and the player will have the choice to try again or leave. And if all Glow Pikmin are "killed", so to speak, the Lumiknoll will eject 10 Glow Pikmin, but only once. If all Glow Pikmin are lost again, the night expedition will be failed. Surviving a night expedition with the Lumiknoll at critical health will award the "Hurtknoll" achievement.
