Night expedition
Gameplay aspect

Night expeditions are exploration periods that occur during the night on PNF-404. During them, the goal is to protect Lumiknolls. Glow Pikmin, the only Pikmin accessible during the night, live in and are propagated by them. Lumiknolls contain a valuable substance known as glow sap, which is highly sought after by enemies.

At nighttime, enemies become frenzied after a short period, indicated by their eyes glowing red. In this state, they seek out and attempt to destroy Lumiknolls. A Lumiknolls' stability is indicated by a health bar in the heads-up display, and also the glowing interior as damage will cause parts of it to darken. Completing night expeditions will reward glow seeds, used to summon Glow Pikmin in caves, and glow sap, used to cure leaflings.

In Pikmin 2... Again?

What if it was another story...?
This article or section pertains to Pikmin 2... Again?, a fanon game created by Blower Pot.

Night expeditions return in Pikmin 2... Again?. They remain almost the same, except that the Lumiknoll produces glow sparkles, one for every 20 remaining Glow Pikmin, rather than glow sap when successfully defended. During the night, Glow Pikmin display no resistance to any hazard, but ultra-neutral spray, always yielded by nectar eggs during a night expedition, will make them temporarily resistant to any normal hazard except for explosions, acid, getting eaten, blunt force, knockback, panic, smoke, magic, and fog. Antenna Beetles prevent obscured enemies from being displayed as a red silhouette, Static Beetles prevent seeing the Luminknoll's health on the heads-up display, and Screeching Beetles prevent the music from changing when the Luminknoll is being attacked. Also during the night, dirt mounds produce an endless amount of bomb rocks, but only supply a few at a time. Defense Mode is much like a night expedition, but as stages and with the addition of more challenges.

In Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid, night expeditions are unlocked after the All-Purpose Medicinal Press is collected. Their story purpose is to collect enough glow sap to help Bentley and Eloise's dog Roacher recover from the crash at the beginning of the story. Unlike in Pikmin 4, night expeditions function more like raids, with the player using Glow Pikmin to defend the Lumiknoll against waves of enemies. Glow pellets can now be found within Glowy Posies alongside clumps on the ground. The expedition cannot end by waiting for sunrise, and every enemy must be defeated before they destroy the Lumiknoll. Every night expedition ends with a fight against a unique boss enemy that must be slain. Some enemies, such as Dusk Spectralids, don't actively attack the Lumiknoll, and can be ignored.
