Attacks | Buries Pikmin |
The Mudwisp is a honeywisp appearing in Pikmin: Wide World. It can be in pairs or trios, but none will reveal themselves until Pikmin come near, with or without a leader. When this happens, a Mudwisp will materialize in the air, try to drift over them, moving its fins and swaying its hips all the while, and drop the mud it was carrying onto them to smother them, and then suddenly disappear. Up to 2 Mudwisps can appear at once even if 3 inhabit the same territory. It will continue this behavior so long as Pikmin are around. Even while invisible, a Honeywisp will periodically emit distinct high-pitched gurgles, indicating its position.
A Mudwisp is a ghostly creature with translucent skin and a brown interior. Its brown eyes are connected to its interior, and its small mouth is triangular. As for its head, there is a pair of backward-facing antennae on top, a mohawk-like feature positioned between, and a feeler on each side. Its long arms end in fins, and its 3 legs grip a droplet of mud.
A mild annoyance at best, Mudwisps are harmless. The most they can do is bury Pikmin and leaders under the mud they carry, requiring Pikmin to be plucked or whistled out, though they must be plucked once the mud dries, and leaders to struggle out while the mud is still wet. A Mudwisp will immediately disappear, dropping its load in panic, the moment its mud is struck, most likely by a thrown Pikmin. A direct hit to the Mudwisp itself, however, will kill it instantly, sending its body plummeting to the ground in addition to its mud. Winged Pikmin are best for this as they automatically target the Mudwisp rather than its mud. If hit by a thrown Rock Pikmin, a Purple Pikmin pound, or other forms of extreme blunt force, the Mudwisp's delicate membrane will disintegrate, leaving only its interior, which serves as an additional half-a-blob of mud.
In ultra-spicy difficulty, the Mudwisp will deliberately try to toss its mud at nearby Pikmin and accompanying leaders.
Notes
- Data file #1 (all difficulties): Mudwisps are named after the mud they carry and try to smother Pikmin with.
- Data file #2 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): The Mudwisp will toss its mud at Pikmin and leaders outside of its reach.
Olimar's comments
- “This aggressive honeywisp pelts anything intruding upon its territory with mud, a fortunately benign substance. Anything small the mud lands on is usually smothered under it, but they can easily free themselves and escape a little dirtied up.”
Shacho's comments
- “Free mudbaths on this planet?! Maybe I should bring Dorris here someday... She goes to the local spa about three times a month, and this proves she spends more money than she needs to.”
Marie's comments
- “If mudwisps didn't make such a mess with the mud they carry, I'd say they would make fine pets. Couldn't they carry something a little cleaner, though? Maybe water? Hmm, then I suppose they wouldn't be called mudwisps...”
Louie's comments
- “Inedible. Unless you like eating mud. The only workable part of the creature is its mud. Cut up some cucumber to cover your eyes after it covers you in mud! Mud.”
Dolphin Lander's comments
- “So... what do mudwisps do with their mud aside from burying intruders under it? Surely, they don't eat it, so they must use it to build nests, but for what larva? Do the larva appear for their parents like the adults do for pikmin?”
