Bomb rocks, also written as bomb-rocks, are explosive rocks with cracks through which glowing yellow and red energy flows. Upon being activated, such as by being hit or set down, a bomb rock will light up and emit a hiss until it eventually violently detonates, damaging Pikmin, leaders, enemies, and some obstacles. The explosions can trigger a chain reaction if they hit other bomb rocks. Some enemies utilize bomb rocks to their advantage, and some enemies also have notable interactions with bomb rocks, such as being able to eat them.
In Pikmin 1, bomb rocks are slightly smaller than a Pikmin can be carried by Yellow Pikmin. A bomb rock explosion will instantly make all bomb rocks in the vicinity explode.
In Pikmin 2, bomb rocks are remarkably large, serving as obstacles more than tools, and can not be carried by Pikmin, only pushed around slowly by leaders and enemies. A bomb rock that gets hit by an explosion will only initiate its countdown. Throwing a Purple Pikmin directly on top of a bomb rock will make it explode instantly.
In Pikmin 3, bomb rocks are in between the sizes they were in the prequels and can be carried by any type of Pikmin. An explosion triggers a neighboring bomb rock's explosion in around half a second, resulting in quite a fast chain of explosions. Also, a bomb rock's explosion will instantly unearth a buried object in its range.
