Although a Berry Bloyster will not eat Pikmin or leaders, it can be beneficial or detrimental depending on the subspecies. Because it secretes the juices of the particular berries it eats, touching a Berry Bloyster will affect Pikmin, leaders, and even enemies in a way that particular spray normally would. Those that feed on ultra-spicy or ultra-bitter berries will benefit Pikmin and, in the case of ultra-bitter juice only, leaders that touch them; those that eat ultra-poison or ultra-hot berries often necessitate the use of [[White Pikmin]] or [[Red Pikmin]] to take down; those that eat ultra-minty berries reenergize leaders, and those that eat ultra-sweet berries may attract other enemies. Berry Bloysters can be attacked from any part of their body but are particularly resilient for their size, so their gill-bulb is the optimal target not only because it does not secrete berry juice but also because attacking the gill-bulb inflicts additional damage. Throwing Pikmin on the gill-bulb is not necessary, as Pikmin swat at it from the ground, unable to latch on due to its small size. A [[Purple Pikmin]] pound landed on its back will inflict decent damage. They violently shake attacking Pikmin off of themselves as a method of defense. Upon death, a Berry Bloyster will cough up between one to two berries of its respective type, then stiffen up and shrink considerably, adopting a dried and shriveled appearance. At this point, it ceases secreting berry juice and can be safely carried by its gill-bulb by any Pikmin type. Uniquely, its remains serve as an equivalent of 4 berries-worth of juice when brought to the [[Dolphin Lander]] or its pod.

In Pikmin X: Deep Freeze, the Berry Bloyster is about as large as a Toady Bloyster. It more closely resembles that creature's incarnation in Pikmin 3 and thus has an extendable tongue with several smaller ones branching off the tip, which it uses to pluck berries off of Burgeoning Spiderworts and eat them. A side effect of its diet causes the Berry Bloyster to concentrate chemicals from the berries into its skin, allowing it to emit poisonous gas while submerged in water. This makes it important to catch it while it is on land so that it cannot shield itself using poison. When Pikmin are in front of it, the Berry Bloyster will wave its tongue around to poison them as well, but does not eat them.

Burgeoning Bloysters are strange molluskings, omnivorous like most others. While they happily feed on small prey such as Puckering Blinnows, sheargrubs, or Pikmin, they much prefer the berries of Burgeoning Spiderworts. Due to this species's fascination with the berries of the plant, the gill's bulb holds the likeness of the Burgeoning Spiderwort's flower just below the gill bulb, having five places to place berries. There exist three subspecies of Burgeoning Bloysters: Spicy, which are red, Bitter, which are purple, and Rounded, which are magenta. Upon death, a Burgeoning Bloyster will drop any berries they had on their flower, their gill bulb, and their body. All three subspecies have somewhat longer bulb stalks than the average Toady Bloyster to accommodate their berry storage. This can be used to one's advantage as weighing its bulb down with enough Pikmin and then calling them back will cause the bulb to smack into the creature's body, flinging off any Pikmin and berries that are still attached, and causing massive damage to the beast.

Spicy Burgeoning Bloysters eat only ultra-spicy berries. They are faster than the average Toady Bloyster and have red and orange stripes to match, scaring away most predators due to thinking they are poisonous, though Pikmin are not fooled. They also tend to grab more Pikmin in one bite than a Toady Bloyster. However, that is not the extent of their abilities, as they also can spray a combination of their own ink and ultra-spicy essence, in copious amounts. This tactic not only causes Pikmin to panic, but it also causes them to become even faster than they are at flower-stage maturity for a limited amount of time. This not only causes trouble rounding Pikmin up, but also causes them to get around to the creature's front faster, where it then proceeds to gobble them up.

Bitter Burgeoning Bloysters, on the other hand, only eat ultra-bitter berries. They are slightly slower than the average Toady Bloyster and cannot be petrified. They have blue and purple stripes, allowing them to camouflage, but this camouflage cannot fool Pikmin. They tend to grab fewer Pikmin, but they also eat them faster. They can spray a combination of ultra-bitter essence and their own ink, causing most Pikmin to become encased in stone while others panic. It can turn around quicker than Spicy Burgeoning Bloysters, allowing for a greater opportunity for slaughter.

Rounded Burgeoning Bloysters are named for the fact that they prefer a more rounded meal, eating both types of Burgeoning Spiderwort berries. They are faster, but also have good traction and thus can turn around more quickly. They also can't be encased in stone. They have red, orange, purple, magenta, and blue stripes. They grab an average amount of Pikmin in one bite and eat at the same speed. They spray a combination of both types of essence and their ink, encasing half in stone and causing half to panic and become faster than they would be in the flower stage. The Rounded Burgeoning Spiderwort is by far the most dangerous of the three subspecies.

Attacks Secretes spiderwort berry juice

The Berry Bloyster is a mollusking appearing in Pikmin: Wide World. There are 6 subspecies, each corresponding to the spiderwort berries it feeds on: ultra-spicy and ultra-bitter from Burgeoning Spiderworts, ultra-toxic from Spiny Spiderworts, and ultra-hot, ultra-minty, and ultra-sweet from Sunset Spiderworts. Berry Bloysters idly explore a small area around their respective spiderwort, either on dry land or in water, moving slowly and taking occasional pauses, never straying too far away from the plant. Its tail occasionally sways or twitches. A Berry Bloyster constantly secretes the juices of the berries it feeds on through its porous, slimy skin, and so it leaves behind a short-lasting slime trail that matches its color but does not have its effects. Berry Bloysters pay little mind to Pikmin and leaders, interested only in spiderwort berries of their respective type, which they feed upon using a single, long, slender tongue to pull them into their mouth. Berry Bloysters will feed upon any of those berries in their vicinity no matter if they are still on the plant or the ground. Unlike with most molluskings, Pikmin, leaders, and some enemies can not walk up onto the back of a Berry Bloyster because of its steep hump.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, Berry Bloysters release a short-lasting cloud of berry juice around themselves when they shake Pikmin off.

Notes

  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #1 (all difficulties): Berry Bloysters eat only spiderwort berries of their respective type, whether they are on the plant or the ground.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #2 (all difficulties): Berry Bloysters secrete the juices of the berries they eat, affecting anything they touch. Some may be dangerous...
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #3 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): When Berry Bloysters shake their bodies, they release a spray cloud, saturating the local area.

Olimar's comments

PWW Captain Olimar icon.png Each of the subspecies of berry bloyster has a wildly different coloration and all feed on very specific spiderwort berries. It lives its entire life searching for spiderworts that bear the berries of its preference, obsessively keeping vigil over a plant it finds, feeding off the spiderwort until it or the plant dies. The reason for its tail and gill-bulb respectively resembling the spiderwort it feeds from and the berries it feeds on is a mystery, although one theory is that perhaps spiderworts are at least somewhat sentient and find comfort in detecting other spiderworts. After first hatching, the berry bloyster is off-white, with the slightest hint of color to its skin. This coloration, as well as its appetite for the berry it shares its color with, becomes increasingly more vibrant the older it becomes. All through its life, the berry bloyster is able to utilize the juice from the berries it consumes to defend itself.

Shacho's comments

PWW President icon.png Ooh, pretty! These creatures would be good for farmers harvesting crops, but it seems they only harvest berries from those tall plants they are always found around. Even worse, they eat those berries immediately after plucking them!

Marie's comments

PWW Marie icon.png These little critters are peaceful and seem content so long as they have a supply of spiderwort berries to feed on. They're so cute and are easily one of my most beloved species on PNF-404! Just... don't pester them too much if they're poisonous or fiery. Wait, why would you have one of those in the first place?

Louie's comments

PWW Louie icon.png Each color of these creatures has a distinct taste. Best sliced thinly and used for flavoring or garnish. Also good as puree. Must try them all...

Dolphin Lander's comments

PWW Dolphin Lander icon.png Do berry bloysters know their spray can have adverse effects on creatures around it? Or does it spray solely in an attempt to deter predators? Whichever the case, the effects it has on creatures, especially Pikmin, are incredibly interesting.

Attacks Poisons Pikmin

The Berry Bloyster is a smaller subspecies of mollusking that lives exclusively aboveground. Its body is bright green with red and blue splotches, and its drooping gill bulb is cyan, giving this creature a rather colorful appearance. The Berry Bloyster feeds on the berries of Burgeoning Spiderwort plants, using its long feeding tentacles to pluck the berries off of the plant. Its many tentacles are laden with toxins that poison Pikmin making contact with them. While it can not eat Pikmin, it can cause many of them to suffocate. If attacked, the Berry Bloyster will shake Pikmin off and flee to the nearest body of water, where it can rest. When killed, it drops two to four berries of random color and its gill bulb.
