Male Sheargrubs can easily be distinguished from Female Sheargrubs by their dark purple color and large mandibles. Unlike the females, which are believed to scavenge dead Pikmin, Male Sheargrubs are predatory and extremely aggressive and will attack leaders and Pikmin when the opportunity presents itself. Sheargrubs, both male and female, will also deconstruct any nearby stick bridges. In Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2, they suffocate in water. In Pikmin 3, they can regenerate health while buried. In Hey! Pikmin, Male Sheargrubs can appear from the ground and ceilings.

Male Sheargrubs appear in Pikmin 251 and are slightly faster than they were in Pikmin 2. They also can see prey from farther away and travel farther distances to pursue them.

Notes

Olimar's observations

Since our last journey here, these enemies have gotten faster and even more aggressive. While they are small and only attack one Pikmin at a time, it would be best to take out these creatures soon before they pick off our numbers. They also like to attack us captains directly and do heavy damage to our suits, which is never good.

Cookin' with Louie

The innards of this bug work well in a good soup. Combine this beast with the Female Sheargrub recipe for the perfect soup and salad dinner combo!

Notes

Tike's notes

These stubborn pests do nothing worse than eat up my Pikmin's bridges. I must seek out them on my radar quickly or else that bridge is supper tonight. These creatures' counterparts of the females also eat up bridges. It makes me wonder: why do the males hunt down Pikmin if they eat the bridges? Maybe the males have bigger appetites?

Alice's notes

Very cute but stubborn. They also don't know how to treat their women. Seriously you don't share your food, You eat Pikmin while they can't, and you sit there allowing our Pikmin to kill them while you just target your nearest prey. Talk about a bad husband. However, after 500 years of neglect they caused, don't we all think they would fight back? Thinking about it, it is just their culture I guess.

Captain Pikmin's notes

Defeating them is easy but tracking them isn't. Make sure you've got your Sheargrub finding equipment on to prevent them from tearing apart our bridges.

In Pikmin Eco, the Male Sheargrub is the male equivalent to the Female Sheargrub, and unlike their female counterparts is harmful towards Pikmin. However, it is the weakest enemy in the game, as all it does is bite one Pikmin at a time. Aside from that, it behaves exactly like the female species.

Male Sheargrubs appear in Pikmin Forever with new behaviors and intricacies. Their eyes give off a noticeable glow in dark areas, and the appearance of their pincers can vary between each specimen, such as one's being blunter and another's having more of a sawtoothed edge. They can be lured far from their initial position, and when the Pikmin or leaders they were following flee, they will burrow into the ground there and make that their new territory. When lured and left on hard material such as rock, a Male Sheargrub will seek a softer material such as dirt to burrow into. Male Sheargrubs also react with surrounding vegetation in that, in dark locations, they are attracted by the light given off by glowcaps and will congregate around them for some moments before burrowing; furthermore, in the same environments, they target Mushroom Pikmin because of their bioluminescent qualities, and leaders because of their beacons, more often than other Pikmin. When critically injured, a Male Sheargrub will burrow underground to start healing, but landing a Purple Pikmin near their burrowing spot will force it out of the ground and temporarily daze it

The Male Sheargrub appears in Pikmin V, completely unaltered from other games. It can only destroy bridges in Silent Woods, as the ones in Savannah Wilds are made of fragments.

Notes

Brittany's notes

Their sharp mandibles may seem intimidating, but in reality, Male Sheargrubs are herbivorous. There are very few creatures smaller than a Sheargrub for them to even hunt, after all. Because of this, both genders serve as gatherers, with males having a broad range and females staying local to watch their eggs.

Olimar's notes

Sheargrubs are weak and slow, but they appear in groups and have a quick bite, so trying to ignore them may not be the best idea. They can be overwhelmed by charging, but there may be casualties for the same reasons. Like Dwarf Bulborbs, they can be killed with a direct hit from above, so with good aim dispatching them becomes easy.

Louie's notes

Unlike the female, this one needs some work. Grind the meat up and sauté it with some seasonings, mustard, sour cream, and optionally Hocotate onions and mushrooms. Pour over egg noodles in a casserole dish and bake until the sauce is well-settled.

In Pikmin: Dimensional Breach, Male Sheargrubs are unchanged from their appearances in past games. Louie can recruit them with his King of Bugs upgrade, using them to build stick bridges and climbing sticks. Thus, they function similarly to their female counterparts, although with offensive capabilities.

Notes

Sagittarius' notes

The male and female sheargrubs should be housed in the same glass cages, in a manner similar to ant farms. The males are vitally important, for they will feed the females their share of the food.

Libra's notes

The rich, royal purple of this specimen's exoskeleton is a color not easily recreated on Hocotate. The exoskeleton itself is soft and flexible enough to work with, yet it is durable enough to retain its shape and even resist damage to some degree. A perfect material for high-quality underwear!

Charlie's notes

While the females are harmless until they begin impeding the progress of important missions, attacking a male sheargrub can easily be classified as self-defense. Outside of that, any appreciable attack will work to defeat these pests.

Derrick's notes

Unlike their female counterparts, male sheargrubs are not even close to cooperative in experiments. Given the chance, they will chew through any restraint or barrier I set up for them, and they'll even attack me if I get too close. However, their sharp, pointed mandibles make an excellent material for knives or sewing needles.

Male Sheargrubs are one of the most common enemies heard in every area. They appear in every cave except for Maze of the shadow.

Notes

Olimar’s notes

This creature, being one of the most seen creatures on PNF-404, the first being the Female Sheargrub these things are known to burrow under the ground and rise up when it’s time to attack. They use their mandibles to grab their prey and keep them there until they devour it whole. They devour because there’s no sign of teeth on them, so they have to resort to devouring prey whole.

Louie’s notes

Everyone knows the smashing of the meal Sheargrub a Casserole. This delicious delight is a smash hit on Hocotate. The creaminess of the sliced avocado, the flavorful flavor of the male Sheargrub and the meats, and the crunchy taste of the cheese.

The Male Sheargrub (ウジンコ♂, lit.: "Parrot Maggot ♂") is a mandiblard appearing in Pikmin: Treacherous Treasures. It is a purple grub-like creature with an armored head and large mandibles. After appearing from the ground, be it by burrowing out or when plucked from under Flukeweeds, it slowly crawls towards Pikmin to eat them, slowly chewing and eating them one at a time, and leaders to bite them. It actively deconstructs any wooden bridges in its vicinity when left alone. Although a direct Pikmin throw to its back will kill it instantly, a Male Sheargrub can also be lead into water to deplete its health rather quickly. Explosions, such as that from bomb rocks, will force a buried sheargrub out of hiding.
