The Cloaking Burrow-nit is an insect-like creature. It has a dark blue shell with large, red eye-like markings on it. When it hunts, it chooses a place where it rests face-down in the ground, patiently waiting for its prey to draw near. If it is approached, it emerges and attempts to follow and attack the Pikmin until they escape out of its pursuit range, when it then promptly returns to the spot where it was resting and re-burrows its head to wait for its next opportunity to chase prey. It has a sharp proboscis that can be thrust into prey, piercing the victim and causing damage, right before sucking it up and swallowing it.
Burrow-nits will deconstruct nearby stick bridges, similar to sheargrubs.

The Cloaking Burrow-nit appears in Pikmin V alongside its relative, the Joustmite. The two are often found together, tricking leaders as to which direction they should be approached from. Its new design increases the overhang of the shell over the face, making it harder to throw Pikmin at it instead of rushing.
Notes
Brittany's notes
- “Once exclusive in territory to its close relative the Joustmite, the two have increasingly begun not just overlapping range, but cohabiting entirely. Their ability to confound predators, particularly Pikmin, with opposite-facing shells has proven quite effective. I suspect it's only a matter of time before we begin seeing hybrids if not valid crossbreeds, which may require a reworking of their taxonomy.”
Olimar's notes
- “Caution must be taken when attacking, as it is only vulnerable where it is capable of fighting back. Keep strafing in circles and chip away at the area between the proboscis and its shell. Rock Pikmin are immune to its one attack, though getting hits in is difficult due to the eave of its shell.”
Louie's notes
- “I like to come up with different recipes for the same grub on this planet to mix it up a little. But you really can't beat boiled Burrow-nit, especially since the body sticks so strongly to the shell that there aren't many ways to serve it anyway.”

Matilda is the Cloaking Burrow-nit that appears in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. She is encountered in the Trampled Tundra, uniquely encountered along with Argus, with whom she has formed a "defensive formation" to protect both of them in hunting. She can be a useful creature to Awaken if the Diamond Settlement has excess wood, due to her Wood Eater skill.
Matilda is always encountered alongside Argus the Joustmite, and the two of them will never separate prior to their Awakening. When the two of them are together, both Matilda and Argus will press themselves together, with Argus in the front and Matilda in the back, forming a single moving entity which is protected on both its front and back. This tactic renders both of them nearly completely protected from all harm, with the only way that they can possibly be damaged being if they can be forcibly separated, or if something strikes them with enough force to damage them through their shells.
Matilda and Argus have known each other their whole lives, having been childhood friends since they were both larvae. The two of them have always done nearly everything together, which continues into their time in the Antarctic. When Awakened, the two of them remain nearly inseparable, working together and conversing together in the settlement. It is possible that the two burrow-nits have romantic feelings for one another, though both of them deny this, stating they're "just good friends."
Matilda's name translates to "mighty in battle", possibly referencing her powerful spearing proboscis and shell armor.

Attacks | Eats Pikmin |
The Cloaking Burrow-nit is a returning enemy appearing in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature retains its appearance from Pikmin 2. This creature is extremely rare to find, only being found in the Nostalgic Dive and the final cave. The burrow-nit will remain in the ground with its shell poking out, like a Joustmite. Once approached, it will pop out of the ground and pursue its attackers. After recoiling its proboscis, it launches it out, impaling and eating up to three Pikmin. The only way to take out a Cloaking Burrow-nit is by charging its face head-on, as the shell on its back nullifies all attacks from any Pikmin type. Most creatures, excluding all bosses, that see the pattern on the burrow-nits shell will run off in fear.
