Joustmites are enemies that behave similarly to the Cloaking Burrow-nit and look like them as well. They can be seen as the opposite of the Burrow-nit however, as Joustmites shield the front of their body, requiring the Pikmin to attack from behind. Winged variants of Joustmites, known as Flighty Joustmites, can sometimes be found alongside these creatures.
Argus is the Joustmite that appears in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. He is encountered in the Trampled Tundra, uniquely encountered along with Matilda, with whom he has formed a "defensive formation" to protect both of them in hunting. He can be a useful creature to Awaken if the Diamond Settlement has excess wood, due to his Wood Eater skill.

Argus is always encountered alongside Matilda the Cloaking Burrow-nit, and the two of them will never separate prior to their Awakening. When the two of them are together, both Argus and Matilda will press themselves together, with Argus in the front and Matilda in the back, forming a single moving entity which is protected on both its front and back. This tactic renders both of them nearly completely protected from all harm, with the only way that they can possibly be damaged being if they can be forcibly separated, or if something strikes them with enough force to damage them through their shells.

Argus and Matilda have known each other their whole lives, having been childhood friends since they were both larvae. The two of them have always done nearly everything together, which continues into their time in the Antarctic. It is possible that the two burrow-nits have romantic feelings for one another, though both of them deny this, stating they're "just good friends."

Argus's name references a mythological giant with one hundred eyes. Although Argus does not have one hundred eyes, he still has two large eyes that never stop watching, those being the eye patterns on his shell. The name "Argus" also translates to "watchful guardian", again connecting to Argus's shell eye markings.

Just like the Cloaking Burrow-nit, the Joustmite hides partially buried in the ground, waiting for unsuspecting prey. Once a group of Pikmin enters the attack range of the enemy, it pops out from under the ground and proceeds to attack Pikmin by attempting to use its long, needle-like proboscis to spear them. If any Pikmin are caught in this attack, they will be held in the air for a brief moment before being eaten. Unlike the Burrow-nit, the Joustmite can capture up to three Pikmin with this attack.

The Joustmite appears in Pikmin V alongside its relative, the Cloaking Burrow-nit. The two are often found together, tricking leaders as to which direction they should be approached.

Notes

Brittany's notes

Originally thought to have a reversed shell, it has recently been found that larval Joustmites initially grow their shell on their back before molting it and wearing it as a helmet. The evolutionary benefit of this is unclear, though it did allow for the regrowth of its vestigial wings to form the Flighty Joustmite subspecies. Grounded Joustmites have since begun grouping with Cloaking Burrow-nits to avoid being outcompeted.

Olimar's notes

Though it behaves very similarly to the Cloaking Burrow-nit, it is fought quite differently. It has learned to face you as it is emerging, so you can't ambush it. Instead, you need to get Pikmin on the other side through methods like throwing them over it or using Planning.

Louie's notes

Now this is a hearty grub. Cut the flesh and some potatoes into cubes and throw in a pot with flour and cream for a fix-and-forget yet unforgettable chowder.

When Awakened, the two of them remain nearly inseparable, working together and conversing together in the settlement.
