The Antenna Beetle is a kettlebug that distracts Pikmin. They use their wings to produce sounds of a high pitch, which interferes with the Treasure Gauge and attracts nearby Pikmin. This noise overrides any commands issued by a leader, so the Antenna Beetle can take command of any Pikmin that are nearby, which can indirectly harm Pikmin by leading them into a hazard. The only way to regain control of the Pikmin is to kill the enemy or force it to leap away again. The enemy periodically jumps high in the air and returns to the ground, stumbling as it lands. It can be prompted to jump again by attacking it or approaching it often. If a Pikmin lands on it, it will roll over on its back and struggle for a bit.

The Antenna Beetle returns in Pikmin 2... Again?. It can't call Pikmin to it, as the Whistling Beeb now has that ability, but it can chase or dodge Pikmin and produce sound blasts to knock them back. In night expeditions, it makes enemies more difficult to see from a distance, especially from behind objects. In Versus Mode, the Antenna Beetle serves as a power-up, and once active, will make the opponent unable to use power-ups until defeated or it eventually disappears.

Notes

Olimar's observations

The Antenna Beetle is one of the few creatures with the ability to call Pikmin to it's side similar to me. Once it has the Pikmin it doesn't do much with them, but it can still be dangerous if the beetle unknowingly leads the Pikmin into danger. Why does it do this? Is it really just defensive, or is there more to what this weird insect is thinking?

Cookin' with Louie

Extract meat from the exoskeleton and sear on all sides in a hot wok to seal in the flavor. Top the dish off with a splash of spicy peanut sauce.

Attacks Attracts Pikmin

The Antenna Beetle is a returning enemy appearing in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The beetle has a very radical, alien look, with a large, dark green, bulbous body and hammer-like head with magenta eyes. A pair of magenta antennas rest on the beetle's head, and a pair of wings rest on the beetle's head. A pair of spindly legs holds the Antenna Beetle up and allows it to waddle around quickly.

The Antenna Beetle will periodically land from the sky and into its territory. It will proceed to wander around and occasionally start to release a large, ear-piercing sound from itself. This sound will not only mess up the treasure gauge, but it will also cause any Pikmin to suddenly be caught in a trance and forced to follow the creature. Hypnotized Pikmin are completely defenseless to hazards and enemies. Once the Antenna Beetle jumps back into the air and disappears periodically, any hypnotized Pikmin will become idle again.

Antenna Beetles can be dangerous if they manage to steal the player's Pikmin with their hypnotic tune. However, Echo Pikmin are completely immune to the screech of an Antenna Beetle, making them the best type to take on the creature. Iguana Pikmin, if enough of them latch their tongues onto the beetle, will prevent them from being able to jump away temporarily. Frozen Statue Pikmin are also immune to the tune, but they cannot fight when frozen.

In Overlord mode, Pikmin that are released from the hypnosis of an Antenna Beetle will be suddenly sent into a frenzy.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: The tune of an Antenna Beetle can easily be ignored by Echo Pikmin.

Olimar's notes

The roar of an Antenna Beetle is seemingly able to hypnotize any type of Pikmin, or creature infected by Pikmin parasites. The frequency emitted by the Antenna Beetle is around the same pitch and frequency as the whistle used by a captain, so perhaps that may explain it. It seems the Antenna Beetle's tune is of an even higher frequency, allowing them to win the Pikmin tug-of-war. I should tell our boss to upgrade the whistles, but he will probably send that kind request into the Request Jar (trash can).

Louie's notes

Crack open the exoskeleton after boiling in a vegetable stew. Consume the meat inside while using the exoskeleton as an organic bowl. The meat tastes of gizzards.

President’s notes

Having to command Pikmin is hard work you know! So maybe these guys will do the job for me! They would be a preferable choice if they stopped running right into pits...

Overlord’s thoughts

UGH! I HATE that noise these insects keep emitting. Maybe I'll relocate these beetles too at the meantime... I'm positive nobody will miss them, you know.
