The Female Sheargrub appears in Pikmin V, completely unaltered from other games. It can only destroy bridges in Silent Woods, as the ones in Savannah Wilds are made of fragments. Avani is the Female Sheargrub that appears in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. Avani is one of the weakest creatures in the game, but she also doesn't take up much space in the Diamond Settlement when Awakened, and she provides the Wood Eater skill, which can be useful early on.
Avani lived with her husband Gulshan before the events of the story. However, during the Trampled Tundra raid led by the Fruity Long Legs group, she was separated from her husband. As a result, she is encountered alone by a search team. Upon being Awakened, she is initially grateful to be given a new place to stay in the Diamond Settlement but also very concerned about Gulshan, asking the residents to go find him as soon as possible. Avani will be too worried to talk about much besides her husband until he is also Awakened, at which point she becomes much calmer and takes an active role in helping with settlement development. If Avani is Awakened first and then confronts Gulshan before he is Awakened too, he will not recognize her due to the effects of the Awakening and attack her, to her horror.
Avani is shown to be quite clever, often coming up with ideas and helping Mamuselah and the other residents in brainstorming settlement development strategies. She also works well with children and wants children of her own, though she is seemingly unable to lay eggs.
Prior to coming to the Antarctic, Avani and Gulshan lived on the first sublevel of the Hole of Beasts. Similar to many other creatures in the Antarctic, she describes her experience ending up in the Antarctic as suddenly encountering a "bright light" in the cave, which appeared very unnatural and seemed to have "come from the sky." Somehow, this strange "light" drew Avani and her husband into it, after which the two of them found themselves in the Antarctic region.
Avani's name translates to "earth", connecting to how Sheargrubs live primarily underground.

The Female Sheargrub is a returning enemy appearing in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature retains its design throughout the Pikmin games. Female Sheargrubs remain underground, burrowing out if approached. They will then pursue any idle Pikmin and leaders, constantly following them, but not doing anything to harm them. They can also chew down stick bridges if they are near any. Occasionally, after a ferocious battle in which dozens of Pikmin died in a specific location, Female Sheargrubs can be found wandering around that area the next day. Female Sheargrubs will retreat from Pikmin once Male Sheargrubs enter the battle.

The Female Sheargrub (ウジンコ♀) is a docile mandiblard appearing in Pikmin: Treacherous Treasures. It is a white grub-like creature with small mandibles. After appearing from the ground, be it by burrowing out or when plucked from under Flukeweeds, it slowly crawls towards Pikmin and leaders, but can't do anything to them except push them around. It actively deconstructs any wooden bridges in its vicinity when left alone. Although a direct Pikmin throw to its back will kill it instantly, a Female Sheargrub can also be lead into water to deplete its health rather quickly. Explosions, such as that from bomb rocks, will force a buried sheargrub out of hiding.

Female Sheargrubs are mandiblards that, unlike the members of the opposing gender, are scavengers. They do not attack leaders or Pikmin, although they still chase them. As with Male Sheargrubs, however, they chew apart stick bridges, stopping only if they are confronted or reduce the bridge to the bundle it was initially found as. In Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2, they suffocate in water. In Pikmin 3, they can regenerate health while buried.

The Female Sheargrub appears in Pikmin V, completely unaltered from other games. It can only destroy bridges in Silent Woods, as the ones in Savannah Wilds are made of fragments. Brittany's notes provide a different explanation for the Mama Sheargrub than Pikmin 4, drawing a parallel to Hey! Pikmin's Queen Shearwig.
Notes
Brittany's notes
- “Although the neoteny of Sheargrubs is quite interesting, the most outstanding fact about them is their diet. Males are strictly herbivorous, but females can and will eat anything they can get their incisors on. This is to feed their need to mass-produce eggs, as they are at the bottom of the food chain. Interestingly, in the rare case that this strategy fails, a female will undergo an incomplete version of the transformation performed by Shearwigs, becoming hypertrophic but otherwise remaining the same.”
Olimar's notes
- “Harmless creatures. They will sometimes eat wooden bridges, but they're so weak that it's a minor nuisance at worst.”
Louie's notes
- “The segments are a perfect size to cut into patties and flip on the grill. Some restaurants even have challenges to eat a burger that uses the whole grub! Of course, they're no match for me...”

Female Sheargrubs appear in Pikmin: The Bulblaxian War and are easy to defeat. They are found in the Temple of Ice.
Notes
Olimar's notes
- “This is the female of a species that preys on Pikmin. Only males have the nutrients to develop a harder jaw, so the females' squishy mandibles don't help it kill Pikmin.”
Ship's notes
- “Hmmm... I wonder what it would be like to be a female sheargrub: "HAHA! DIE PIKMIN!" Squish... squish... squish... "WHY WON'T YOU DIE?!? HAAAAAAAAAAAACKS!!!”

Female Sheargrubs in Pikmin: Dimensional Breach appear alongside their male, winged, and swarming relatives. They are still unable to harm Pikmin, but they will deconstruct stick bridges and climbing sticks. After obtaining his special upgrade, Louie can control them and use them to build the very things they exist to destroy.
Notes
Sagittarius' taming notes
- “The female and male sheargrubs should be kept together at any cost. Males will feed the females over time, so don't worry. Sheargrubs should be placed in a glass tank, not unlike an ant farm, where one can see the distinctive network of subterranean tunnels that these creatures dig out.”
Libra's fashion notes
- “Meh. Nothing much to speak of. The color does make for good shoulder pads for snowboarders, but that's about all I can think of.”
Charlie's battle strategies
- “They aren't hostile at all and go down with one Pikmin. I recommend only destroying them if they try to chew on a bridge or you need a Pikmin boost.”
Derrick's grimoire
- “The perfect test subjects for my experiments, Female sheargrubs don't fight back, can't flee through a steel floor, and are completely helpless against my tests without their mates to back them up.”

Notes
Olimar's notes
- “The common sheargrub species had shed its legs and wings through evolution, and as such, these features are only seen in specific species, such as the coastal sheargrub. Their mouthparts aren't for active hunting, and instead, they sap plants of their juices like aphids. Furthermore, they tend to be more common in the presence of deceased Pikmin, of which they drink the stagnant internal fluids.”
Louie's notes
- “If caught right after laying their eggs, the hormones in their body will make them tastier (at least I think that's how it works)! Mix with four whole eggs, two vine-ripened tomatoes, diced and dried zucchini, and as much feta and emmental cheese as you want. Put the mixture in a pie crust and bake until crispy and golden, and your quiche will be irresistible!”
Ship's comments
- “I find myself getting quite squeamish watching this creature lurch across the ground, especially with that fleshy, raw color of its skin. It's like a choice cut from the butcher's come to life.”

Notes
Olimar's notes
- “I previously thought that red bulborbs and their dwarf equivalent were the most common creatures on PNF-404, but female sheargrubs have shown themselves to own that title. They inhabit every reach of the planet, but fortunately, they are harmless to me and my Pikmin. They don't have any defense mechanism against any predators except for burrowing underground. The lifespan of a female sheargrub is very short, making finding a mate with which to reproduce essential.”
Louie's notes
- “After birth, these creatures have a delightful flavor and are easy to devour. Making a quiche is the best way to cook them.”

The Female Sheargrub (ウジンコ♀?, lit.: "Parrot Maggot ♀") is a docile mandiblard appearing in Pikmin: Treacherous Treasures.
