Anode Beetles are small black beetles with four yellow spots on their wing casings. Their name is due to them periodically producing electrical currents if another one is nearby. This creature is blissfully unaware of Pikmin, and if found alone, they are harmless; but if there is a partner nearby, they can produce an electrical barrier between them, making any nearby Pikmin subject to electrocution. As such, they are commonly found in groups of two or more. As swarming one while it is upright is ineffective, a Pikmin must be thrown on top of it to flip it over before it may be harmed. Purple Pikmin shockwaves can cause them to flip over even if not directly hit.

The Anode Beetle appears in Pikmin 251. It behaves as it does in Pikmin 2, except it now takes less time to right itself after being flipped over.
Notes
Olimar's observations
- “These bugs can be very dangerous due to how Pikmin near electricity usually ends. Of course, once there's only one of them, they can't do much of anything. It's pretty sad honestly. I wouldn't be able to explore this planet so easily without my partner, even if he is a dolt.”
Cookin' with Louie
- “These bugs have a tough shell, but the meat inside is all good. Just sit on a rubber chair or wear good boots prior to eating it, for safety reasons.”

In Pikmin Forever, Anode Beetles have improved graphics, now reflecting light colors, and new behaviors. They will usually gather in groups of three to five near sources of electricity, be it gates, wires, bulbs, or other electrical enemies. This enemy can be defeated much like it can in Pikmin 2, as throwing a Pikmin on top of it will cause it to flip over. Throwing a Rock Pikmin onto it will cause its exoskeleton to shatter, exposing its backside which is much like the Armored Cannon Beetle's except yellow in color. An Anode Beetle in this state gives off a small yellow glow in dark areas, and is no longer vulnerable to non-Yellow Pikmin, as it gives off electricity constantly. They can generate electricity on their own in this state, but if it still has its wing casing, it needs a partner to generate a barrier.

Vzzz is the Anode Beetle that appears in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. He is the only creature able to craft insulated wiring and batteries, though not without the help of another Anode Beetle since two of these creatures are needed to complete a circuit. The only creature that can fulfill this role is Lizz, a Widemouthed Anode Beetle who can be found and Awakened in the Otherworldly Woods. Until Lizz is also Awakened, Vzzz will often speak of his need to find a "partner", and suggest that the Antarctic be explored until a suitable creature is found. He constantly affirms the importance of this mission, saying that if such a creature could be found, he would be able to create incredibly advanced equipment that would greatly help in Diamond Settlement development.
Vzzz is something of a scientist, and he specializes in research relating to electricity and electrical fields. He has a habit of touching any curious object he sees, in an attempt to detect if it has any unique electrical charges. Vzzz is prone to ramble about electrical science, using fancy words that none of the other residents of the Diamond Settlement understand. Vzzz tends to flap his shell-wings whenever he is excited, typically about some scientific discovery, and he clicks his wings together repeatedly as a nervous habit whenever he is stressed.
Vzzz mentions having had a lab partner at one point, who was another Anode Beetle, but he states that his former partner is long gone now. It is not clear exactly what happened to this other Anode Beetle, who could have been killed by any of the Antarctic's many threats.
Vzzz's name seems to be a simple reference to electrical onomatopoeia, as his name sounds like the buzzing of electricity.

“ | Watch out, these beetles will deliver a nasty shock! | ” | – The ship, upon discovering the Anode Beetle |
---|
The Anode Beetle is a returning enemy appearing in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature has a round body with a hard, black exoskeleton, with two yellow dots on each wing casing. Two orange legs with magenta tips are on each side of the Anode Beetle. Along with this, two eyes with magenta sclerae and two long, yellow-tipped antennas are on the Anode Beetle's head.
Anode Beetles can be found in large groups, slowly skittering around their territory. Every fifteen seconds or so, they will stop and begin to rub their wings together. The friction of this will create electrical sparks for a few seconds. Once two Anode Beetles are creating sparks, they will turn their rears to face each other and create a massive electrical arc between their behinds. The arc will last for a few seconds and will zap any Pikmin that aren't immune to electricity. If a Pikmin is thrown on the back of the Anode Beetle, it will flip over for around ten seconds, exposing its soft underbelly which can be damaged. It will then flip back over and resume its scurrying.
Anode Beetles are fairly easy to take out with the proper Pikmin types. Yellow Pikmin and Statue Pikmin can take out the Anode Beetle, as they are immune to the enemy's electrical voltage. A Dart Pikmin can do extreme damage if thrown right on the top of the Anode Beetle, depleting around a third of its health. The shockwave from a Purple Pikmin or Bomb Pikmin explosion can also flip the Anode Beetle over.
In Overlord mode, the Anode Beetle will create a small ring of electricity around itself after it flips itself back over.
Notes
- Data file #1: Anode Beetles can be flipped over through other methods like explosions.
- Data file #2 (Overlord mode): Once it flips over, the Anode Beetle will release a nasty shock!
Olimar's notes
- “These small beetles create electricity through friction in the surrounding air, generating electrons and creating an electrical barrier between its partner. I have been researching the Anode Beetle for a while, and it seems that these creatures not only use this as a method for self-preservation, but also as a mating method. The male beetles will try to generate the most volatile shocks to impress the females, and they will proceed to breed and lay hundreds of eggs. It might be a bit weird that I watch Anode Beetles breeding, but it's all in the name of BIOLOGY!”
Louie's notes
- “The meat of this creature has no nutrients, and has a weak taste. However, their hard wings hold more culinary promise and vitamins. Grind their wings into a fine powder with mortar and pestle. Then, mix together with pepper, salt, and cayenne powder. This leaves you with a nutritious and tangy seasoning.”
President’s notes
- “ZAP! POW! Anode Beetle Rayguns Incorporated! Pokos for millions of miles in my secret safe! I'll rule all of Hocotate!”
Overlord’s thoughts
- “This bug gave me a nasty shock when I tried to hold it. Maybe I should put a voltage warning on these insects when I get the chance.”

In Pikmin: Dimensional Breach, Anode Beetles reappear, functionally identical to how they are in Pikmin Forever. Louie can recruit them with his special upgrade, and they can conduct electricity just like Yellow Pikmin. Their arcing electricity can also be used to attack enemies, but it will also shock any Pikmin who happen to also be following Louie.
Notes
Sagittarius' notes
- “This creature should be ideally kept as far away from electronics as possible, as its electrical charges are too much for the circuits of civilian-issue computers. However, a colony of them does make for a decent electrical fence, and provided they are fed well they will keep your property protected for years.”
Libra's notes
- “The creature’s shell will be all the rage for its iconic black-and-yellow coloration. Sadly, the fact that it is hard as rock makes it really only useful for sun visors or protective helmets.”
Charlie's notes
- “This creature is best tackled with Yellow Pikmin, as any other color is likely to get zapped thoroughly into oblivion. Either flip it on its back by throwing Pikmin on top of it or shatter its exoskeleton with a Rock Pikmin and swarm with Yellow Pikmin.”
Derrick's notes
- “The tube-like heart of the beast pumps all the way down its back, surging with the electricity characteristic of the species’ lifestyle. This snakelike organ should be pulled out and handled with care; although the voltage isn’t directly lethal, it can mess with the circuits of standard-issue life support systems. Once the heart is removed, a spool of metallic wires should be wrapped around it, and then the inferior vena cava and aorta, at opposite ends of the tube, should be plugged with the strangely large screws common on this planet. When the procedure is complete, you should have a battery capable of providing enough electricity to last you for a month.”
